Stoltzfus What a wonderful thing it is to be welcomed to Southern Indiana for Horse Progress Days 2022 by the local cultural institution called Dinky’s Auction. To be sure, it is not only the folks at Dinky’s who will be hosting us, but by and large the whole, or at least a large part, of the local Amish community. After being hosted once at Dinky’s in the past and then graciously twice hosted on the Nick Graber farm just up the road, the Dinky’s Horse Progress puzzle has come together. Dinky’s, launched in 1996, two years after the first Horse Progress Days was held in Lancaster, PA, has become a very important part of the community. There is a creek that runs by the property called Dinky Creek. The man who started it all was named Jake Stoll. He lived near the creek, and since there were probably three or four other Jake Stolls in the neighborhood, he became Dinky Jake. Dinky Jake took a piece of scrub land and made it into a local icon. Two of the current owners of the auction facility, Levi Raber and Paul Raber have, since 2003, built on previous years to make it what it is today, but there is a larger group that has worked together there since 1996, having essentially grown up in the business. The crowds are large, even though the Covid-19 pandemic did slow things down a bit. When I talked to Levi Raber in September of 2021, they had just completed their Dinky’s Auction on sale day (continued on page 7)HORSE PROGRESS DAYS 20226 LBEILER’S MFG. & SUPPLY , LLC Main Office & Warehouse 3025 Harvest Drive Ronks, PA 17572 Phone (717) 768-0174 Fax (717) 768-0097 Manufacturing Address 290 S. This is a three day affair. It has been going on for well over 35 years since it was held on a farm before the Dinky facility was built. On Wednesday they sold about 150 standardbreds with a high of $13,000 and an average of $10,000 on the highest selling 10 head. Thursday was draft horse and pony day with 300 drafts and 60 ponies. A pulling bred Bogg’s Creek Rocky mare sold for $26,000 and a two year old stallion bred the same way brought $25,000. This sale has long been known as a top pulling horse sale. It is the practice of major sales to establish a price at which horses are photographed for publishing a sale report in breed publica- tions. The price had been established at $3,500, but the photographer was being kept too busy, and there would have been far too many pictures to include in a report. So as the sale progressed, an announcement was made that the picture price had been raised to $5,000. This is a real indication of current horse sale conditions as upward price pressure seems to continue. A handsome team of spotted drafts sold for $12,500 each. And then Friday was the day for crossbreds and more ponies. There is lots of activity at the auction barn, but the regular Friday night sales are one of a kind. There can be as many as nine auctioneers selling at the same time. Some of the different categories are livestock, small animals, furniture and box lots, antiques and collectibles, produce including plants, flowers and trees, building supplies, lawn care equipment, and hay and straw. There could be as many as 1,500-1,800 people on the grounds for the Friday night sale. There are also additional special sales for things like building supplies, and the spring lawn and garden sale. And there is a special cast iron sale that is both live and online. Local support is strong since the community-coming-together side of the sale rivals the commercial side in importance. They also do off-site public auctions of all kinds of things which keeps them busy and they like to collaborate with other auctioneers like they did for a big auction shindig in Alabama in January of 2021 where they worked with Chupp Dinky’s (continued from page 5) Treasures for sale to the highest bidder (continued on page 9)Next >
